Gender

The LGP is supplemented by $3 million under the White House’s Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative, which brings Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) to the forefront of the United States Government’s development agenda. These funds will be managed by the same USAID/Philippines program and cooperative agreement with Cardno. The three-year W-GDP Program aims “to enhance the opportunity for women to participate in, contribute to, and benefit meaningfully and equitably from, economic opportunities as individuals, parents, workers, consumers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and investors.” In PNG, the W-GDP Program will strengthen WEE across the “value chain” of women in the economy: from farming women in rural PNG, to women entrepreneurs developing new businesses, to women as employees in the formal sector. The W-GDP Program will do this by working on a blended effort with LGP (which also has a strong gender theme) as a platform for site teams, resources, relationships, and outreach. The W-GDP Program will also scale-up existing initiatives in gender programming to enable the LGP partners to expand their activities and reach
more women across the country. The W-GDP Program will take a family-centered approach and show high-visibility results that will enable national and international stakeholders to “see” women’s empowerment in PNG.
